Apple of My Eye

It’s Apple all the time right now.  I just finished the Jobs book.  I conduct everything electronic on an Apple device:  my laptop, iPad 1, iPhone 4s (the Touch, Mini, Shuffle – version way back when! and newer Shuffle around in my apartment somewhere).  I can’t get enough.

We are holding out on the new iPad until there is more clarity on the case.  I know, can you tell I live with someone who takes this very very seriously?  But I couldn’t help but walk by the 5th Avenue store in New York on Friday morning.  What a scene, and this is before 7 am (yes, we start early).  Back in 2010, we got our coffee and watched the release of the 1st one.

I had to include this picture from last year.  Sad Apple Day when Jobs died.  The stores’ windows here were covered with sticky notes.

My New Fav App: CardStar

Do you carry around points and rewards cards, cards for grocery stores, cards for drugstores, cards for travel? I hate to put the mini ones on my keychain, so I have them wrapped in a rubber band that I carry around. I like to make sure I get my Insider Beauty points at Sephora, what can I say?

I’m always on the lookout for a neat app to make my life easier. Some are silly and I don’t use them, but Cardstar is really very useful. This one came to me from Nathanael, the Pilates instructor at Chelsea Piers. And it’s free, anadded bonus.

CardStar lets you load your card numbers and adds the bar codes, so it looks just like your plastic card. You can search for store, airline, etc in the various groups (travel, grocery) in the app. The developers must have contracted with quite a few places because there was only 1 I couldn’t find.

Here is my uploaded CVS card:

The real test of whether this app works, though, is taking it to a store and getting them to scan my screen.

Test Location: DSW in Manchester, CT

I really wanted to try it here because I could be certain there wasn’t a line behind me. At first, she looked at it and seemed a little perplexed. I assured her it was my card, so she gave it a scan. I think we were both surprised when it registered at the register. I loved her comment: Is that one of those app things?

What I would love to see is coupons for my phone, or stores scanning the coupon code from an email. It seems like such a hassle to remember the actual coupon in the mail, or have to print the email. Another way to “save” money!

Ode to my iPhone

I have a love affair with my iPhone. MB knows, he loves his just as much. Of all my physical items I have this is at the top. It’s a life changer, and I know you think it’s silly. But you will text more, check the internet more…I can “see” my voicemails. Ahh, it’s all so wonderful.

I’ve tested my fair share of apps and am always looking for new useful, neat ones. And I do use them…

There was a night we just started out from our apartment with no particular dinner place in mind, just the sense that we needed to head south into Chelsea. Into the West Village, my tummy starts to rumble. We come upon Wallse. It looks good, there are people there, but is it any good? I’ve previously hit upon this one with Urban Spoon, but take a look at yelp (this is all on the iphone). Deciding to walk on, we give my little device a shake shake shake to get the wheels of Urban Spoon going and discover a little Italian trattoria a few streets down. Thanks Urban Spoon! It’s delightful, with windows open to a quiet street in the West Village, and packed. But cash only. And being someone that has $2 in cash to her name, we were now in search of an ATM. Another win: BoA mobile banking with ATM locations! And Google maps to tell me which is closest!

Seriously, what would we have done before?

1. We never discovered this place (and honestly, I can’t remember the name, it’s on Washington, almost to W 10th).
2. We would have abandoned the find for lack of cash (I’m against sketchy ATM machines in bodegas).
3. Gone somewhere we’ve already been.

I have the 3G, but not the 3Gs and have been told by my tech savvy sources that the next version will be a new form factor (the size, thickness, etc will change). I’m ready. And if it would go to Verizon, too, I’d be even more ready.

I can’t explain how great this device is. You will use aspects of it you never thought you needed? Did I ever need to email a pic instantly or post it to facebook? um, YES?!?!
